Hygiene Your Bathroom. Tiles come either in glass for gloss or unglazed. These usually respond well to warm water and a soft cloth or sponge if done frequently. Unlike previous tile materials, today’s materials can be made clean with mere water and cheap detergent. If the dirt has coagulated then there may be a dirt residue but this can also be removed using chemicals such as chlorine.
There are a variety of methods that can be employed to ensure bathroom tile cleanliness:
- Regular soap- This is probably the most common and non-tehnical method. It involves mixing a half a cup of water softener which can easily be purchased almost anywhere. 2T rottenstone usually works well but chlorine and other mild bleaches can also work if mixed in 1 cup of water OR 1-2 tablespoons of tri-sodium phosphate with and a gallon of water. A sponge is then utilized to clean and rinse.
- Dealing with dark stains – If you encounter stubborn stains which refuse to respond to regular scrubbing, then apply liquid laundry detergent directly on the stain. Then leave the area untreated for a few hours then scrub vigorously with water and then rinse.
- What about mildew? – In this case you would utilize a soft bristle brush which can also be purchased at most hardware stores. You would also mix bleach with water and let it sit there for a few hours and your mildew would be gone.
- When dealing with hard stains, chloride bleach applied directly to the stain works like magic.
- Grease deposits- Grease is also a common occurrence when it comes to bathroom tiles. Applying 10% sodium carbonate (soda ash or washing soda) and a mixture of water can eradicate grease.
- Rust – This is common with unglazed tiles and can easily be dealt with by using 5% hydrochloric acid and water and scrubbing moderately.
- Nail polish – This can be annoying but nail polish inside the bathroom tiles can easily be removed by applying a paper towel soaked in acetone nail polish remover. If allowed to sit for a few minutes it can erase the nail polish.
- Cigarette burns – For these, scrubbing lightly with steel wool is recommended.
Be sure to wear protective clothing whenever you’re working with chemicals and also take precautions not to inhale significant quanities of the fumes.
